Deck of Disruptions

An Open-Source Futures Method by Liminal

How might we practice futures thinking as a lived practice?

I created Deck of Disruptions, an open-source futures method designed to help people engage futures thinking beyond workshops, organizations, and professional settings. Originally developed as a facilitated workshop titled Radical Change Waves at the Dubai Future Forum in 2025, the work surfaced a broader question: what changes when foresight becomes something we regularly practice, not simply something we facilitate?

The method invites participants to build a personal deck of disruption cards across six categories shaped by time and lived experience: previous, past, persistent, probable, plausible, and possible disruptions. Rather than resolving uncertainty through idealized future states, the practice focuses on response, helping participants consider how they might navigate layered disruptions with greater intention, adaptability, and awareness.

Designed to be revisited over time, Deck of Disruptions creates space for futures thinking to become lived rather than abstract. Participants imagine themselves 12 to 15 years into the future and reflect on how they act amid change, using foresight not simply as a professional method, but as an ongoing practice across everyday, organizational, and collective life.
